One new study shed some light on something AMAZING that's going to blow your mind.
Ready? There's some substances that we've found in newborn babies' saliva that are present in greater amounts than in adults' saliva. Because of these substances, when baby spit is mixed with fresh breastmilk it forms hydrogen peroxide. Cool, right?
But what does that DO?
It stops nasty bacteria like staph aureus and salmonella from growing and infecting the baby. There's probably also a role for these chemicals in maturing the baby's intestinal cells, since this is baby's first line of defense. This literally changes the baby's microbiome, or types of bacteria in the baby's body. When you realize this affects baby's health for the rest of their life...WOW!
