Born and raised in Texas, I attended Texas A&M and graduated with a degree in Animal Science. My introduction to pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding was through the lens of studying what is normal in animals and the reasons for functions of the body. My first pregnancy was eye-opening to the complexities of the maternal health system, but my comprehensive private childbirth class gave me tools to handle my contractions and knowledge about what I would be faced with in the hospital. An unmedicated birth left me with a feeling as if I could do anything! I knew I wanted to help other women have that same feeling of being in charge of their bodies and births.
While my husband was in the Air Force we lived in Louisiana and Texas, but decided to make Athens, Alabama our permanent home for raising our large family. We have plenty of room to raise animals, search for wild helpful herbs, and grow a garden, as teaching our children about agriculture is important to us. We have found Alabama to be a wonderful place to live, full of down-to-earth people who care for one another. I homeschool our children, as I'm a natural teacher who loves seeing the light bulb go on when someone gains new information.
I've made my knowledge and experience available to other mothers by becoming certified as a Birth Boot Camp Instructor. I act as a birth and postpartum doula, as well as a bereavement doula. In addition, I attend home births with a midwife all over Alabama. This training has prepared me to support families through birth in any trimester and with any outcome. I've attended births in every location: homes, birth center, and hospitals. I've been to Cesarean births (both planned and unplanned), VBACs, complicated births, fast births, long births, medicated and unmedicated births. I feel like I learn more at each one, and it makes me better at preparing couples and supporting them in the postpartum period. To help mothers with breastfeeding I've been certified as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and volunteer as a Breastfeeding Counselor to help those who are breastfeeding. I also volunteer at the Women's Resource Center in Athens to provide free pregnancy services to those who may not be able to afford them. I'm also a trained Herbalist who makes many of the remedies my own family uses for a variety of discomforts. These are available on Facebook and Etsy as Promised Land Herbals.
In modern society many of us have no real experience with babies until we have our own, which is unfortunate. I strive to set couples' minds at ease that they have all the information they need to make good decisions for their families. I want every mother and father to know I support them and am here to help. I want to give you the latest scientific information we have, with an understanding that parents need to trust their own instincts and are ultimately responsible for their children. I want to partner with local families to create reasonable plans to reach the goals they have set for themselves.
