As a doula and an advocate for parental rights, I support the choices parents make. Yes, even if they aren't the choices I would make myself.
It would be funny if it weren't so appalling that I've seen others in the "birth world" only support certain choices. For example, they throw a fit when a mother is encouraged not to give formula when there isn't a medical need. After all, she should be able to do whatever she wants. However, if the same mother chooses not to vaccinate, she should be forced to.
Yet there is demonstrable medical benefit to both.
We have to go back to our principles on these issues. Parents make the decisions they think are best. And after all, they're the ones who have to live with the consequences of their actions.
The principle applies to feeding, vaccinations, inductions, place of birth, medications, and testing. No matter what I would do myself, when my client understands both sides and makes a decision that's the end. They have my support.
Every doula and medical provider should feel the same way. If you don't feel supported by the people around you, get new people.
